Alright, so here’s a funny story for today:

The principal came into my classroom today to talk to one of my students who had apparently been spitting on the front door with a couple of other students. I talked to my student about what the principal said and all the principal told him was to not spit on the door again…there was no punishment. So I decided that a punishment comparable to the “crime” would be to clean the doors. Well, during my kids’ Yup’ik time, I took my one student out to the front doors to clean them. We went outside (it has been 10 and 20 below these past few days, by the way) and started to spray the door with cleaner. Well, apparently spray cleaner freezes when it is extremely cold out, so now there are a few white spots on the front door because we were trying to clean it. Funniest thing ever! My student and I couldn’t stop laughing….good times…

Alright, alright…I know I never update my blog, but I’m updating it now. My family always tells me to update it, but I get so caught up with stuff here and it can be a real hassle to update it since my internet is so slow here (it literally takes about 20 minutes to download 1 song on iTunes…no joke)…However, I realized that I have tons of support from all of you and I know you’d appreciate an update. So here it is:

~OCTOBER~

The snow came and it hasn’t left! When I first moved up here some of the other teachers told me to be sure to look at the boardwalk as often as I could because once the snow came we wouldn’t be able to see it again until next year (if we came back). They were right. I look back on some of my pictures from when I first came to Kotlik and I can’t believe how green it all was. Now all I see is white. But I must say that it is so beautiful out here. I absolutely love it.
Of course, I do miss the mountains and the trees from Washington (so much!), but it is truly gorgeous out here. The land stretches on forever and on the days when the sun is out I feel so peaceful and lucky that I get to experience the beauty that can only be found in rural Alaska. I never thought I would love it out here so much. Sure, sometimes it can feel isolated and it really sucks when I just want to go to Arby’s and get a roast beef sandwich and some curly fries, but it is so peaceful (save for the intoxicated natives shouting at all hours of the night).

The plane rides are even more amazing when it’s a good day out because you can really see that the landscape just goes on forever. I love just looking at the land when flying to Anchorage. The rivers wind in crazy directions. It’s awesome.

Alright, back to October. So after the first death that happened, we had another death in the village the week of Halloween. It was very bad news bears. During the week before Halloween it warmed up so the ice on the river wasn’t very thick. Well, a dad and his son decided to try and cross the river in their snowmachine (snowmobile). They broke through the ice. Both of them would have died, but the dad pushed his son out onto the ice and saved him. They pulled the dad out and took him to the clinic, but he was already gone. It was very tragic. They had his funeral at the school, which may seem strange but you have to remember that there aren’t very many places to go that will fit a lot of people. I only had 4 kids in class that day. I remember that because I took my kids outside for recess and if I remember correctly, it was only 7 or so degrees out. Yes, that’s right…we went outside for recess in below freezing weather. Awesome.

Halloween also signaled the end of the quarter. At the end of each quarter the elementary school has an awards assembly and so for my awards I decided to do a Halloween theme. I thought it was fitting. Here are the awards that I came up with. They’re pretty genius (for the most part), if I do say so myself

Dragon Award for having the most fire & spirit

Frankenstein Award for being the most “put together” and confident

Grim Reaper Award for making a killing in all classwork

Skeleton Award for working yourself to the bone

Werewolf Award for making a change and improving in classwork

Ghoul Award for the “ghoul” with the best attitude

Bat Award for being the most batty and having a high flying attitude

Dracula Award for “sucking it up” and sticking with it

Spider Award for always lending many helping hands

Witch Award for “brewing up” some good work in Math

Ogre Award for being tough

Zombie Award for slowly and steadily getting work done

~HALLOWEEN DAY~

Halloween was pretty exciting. I made pumpkin-shaped pancakes with chocolate chip faces for breakfast for me and Kylie. They were super. Then we were lazy and watched TV and movies all day. The trick-or-treaters started coming very early in the afternoon…around 1-ish I think. VERY early. But it was alright because that meant they were done trick-or-treating earlier so we could enjoy our evening.

~THANKSGIVING~

I had so much fun on Thanksgiving Day. We invited several of the other teachers and their families over. We had a total of 16 people over for dinner. Everyone brought a dish. Kylie and I made green bean casserole and all of the gravy, plus we provided our dishes and drinks since we hosted it (along with Jarrod and Kara). I had never had Thanksgiving with anyone other than my family before, and I really missed them, but I had a great time with my friends. We didn’t have a turkey because the turkey that one of the family’s ordered hadn’t come in yet, so we had ham with a homemade glaze (which was delish!) and moose roast. My second time having moose. Still not sure how much of a fan I am of moose…

After dinner, which we had in the afternoon, everyone left then two of the high school teachers came back later for a game night. That was awesome. We don’t get together very much to play games, but when we do I have a great time.

~DECEMBER~

I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned before, but back in September I was accepted into a professional development course called the School Violence Prevention Demonstration Program. The whole thing is designed to teach kids about the values of democracy in order to help them become productive, responsible citizens thereby reducing school violence. Whew that’s a lot. Anyhoot, the whole thing is funded by SERRC (don’t ask me what it stands for ‘cause I have no idea…) and we meet in Anchorage for four separate weekends throughout the year. The flights, hotel, and breakfast and lunch are all provided. PLUS, I get three college credits and a stipend. It’s a pretty sweet deal. Oh, and my friend Kara, the fourth grade teacher here, was also accepted into the program so we both get to go to Anchorage. It’s pretty cool getting to go with someone else and not by myself.

So anyways, the first meeting was back in September and I’m pretty sure I might have possibly talked about it before. The second meeting was in December (3rd in January, last in April). So, at the beginning of December I went to Anchorage and it was sweet. Every time I go I have to hit some fast food restaurants. Arby’s is a MUST. As long as I get me some Arby’s I’m good. This December trip wasn’t so exciting since winter break was just two weeks away, but it was still fun.

Two weeks flew by and finally I was home! It was soooooo good to be back home and to see my family and BFF!!! I went to 5 movies (yes, 5!), several restaurants, had some tasty drinks, and spent waaayyy too much time playing Super Mario Bros. for the Wii with my brother and sisters. Let me tell you, that is my new favorite game. LOVE it!

One thing I did not love, however, was the rain. It was so wet when I was home! See, one of the good things about Alaska is that even though there’s tons of snow and it’s cold, it is not wet. Though it was forty degrees warmer in Washington than Kotlik, I got soaked every time I went somewhere. But what can you do?

Anyhoot, those two weeks went by like none other. It was super hard to get back on that plane to Anchorage. So hard in fact that my eyes teared up and I almost started crying. And I am NOT a cryer. It was a big deal. I love my family more than anything in the world and I miss them so much when I’m up here. That’s why I love looking at my collages and all of the pictures I have on my wall. I can’t wait to spend the summer with them!

~BACK TO SCHOOL~

I got back to Kotlik on a Sunday and then I had to be back at school for inservice on Monday. That wasn’t fun, especially since I had to be at school at 8:00 and I was so used to sleeping in ‘til 10…just kidding, 11 am. But at least school didn’t start ‘til Tuesday, otherwise I think I would have died.

It was tough getting back into the swing of things at school, but I made it there eventually. The end of the quarter was just two weeks after we got back from break, and then parent-teacher conferences again. I had about the same number of parents as last time, which was good for out here anyways.

Sidenote: I’m pretty sure I mentioned that one of my students moved to another village at the end of the first quarter…well, he moved back at the beginning of this one. I now have thirteen students again.

Oh man, I felt so good after one of my conferences. One of my girls usually doesn’t do her work in class. It’s not that she isn’t capable, because she is more than capable. She just won’t do it. Well, I don’t know what happened, but after winter break it was like she was a whole new kid. She did her work without me reminding her to get it done, and when she finished she just moved on to something else in her folders without me telling her to. It was amazing. She even turned in her homework on time. She was student of the week that first week back. She was just as great the second week, which was also the last week of the quarter. Well, I met with her mom and I told her just how great her daughter had been doing and how proud I was of her. At the end of the conference her mom told me she was so relieved because she thought she was just going to hear bad things about her daughter. It made me feel good that I was able to tell her mom positive things about her…that was probably the best conference I’ve had with a parent.

End of the quarter meant awards assembly. Once again I decided to do a theme, but since Christmas was long gone I decided to do a game theme. For the background of each of their awards I put a picture of the game. They’re pretty sweet. Here are my awards for this quarter. Pretty genius again

Monopoly Award for doing a great job in math

Hungry Hungry Hippos Award for always being hungry to learn new things

Scrabble Award for doing a great job in spelling

Uno Award for being number one in Reading

Battleship Award for battling it out and working hard

Clue Award for excellent problem solving skills

Barrel of Monkeys Award for linking together and being a great friend

Chutes & Ladders Award for climbing back up and improving in school

Twister for being flexible when doing school work

Candyland Award for doing a sweet job in all school work

Ants in the Pants Award for always having high energy

Connect Four Award for helping others connect the dots

Jenga Award for holding it together through change

It was pretty funny because most of kids don’t know what most of these games are so they didn’t understand their awards. Oh well. I thought they were great and that’s what counts, right?

School is halfway over, which is completely insane. Where did the other half go? Seriously!

So quick story…one morning when my students came in and were brushing their teeth, one of my boy’s didn’t look so good. I asked him what was wrong, and apparently the day before he was riding on a snowmachine with a friend and they fell through the ice on the river (we had another warm front for a couple of weeks). Both of them made it out okay, but can you imagine?! I would have been devastated if something had happened to my student. Craziness.

Just a few weeks after break, I was back in Anchorage. This time was the BEST TIME EVER! Usually Kara and I fly out of Kotlik on Friday night after school, but this time Kara had the brilliant idea of going on Thursday night after school and spending Friday in Anchorage before our training on Saturday and Sunday. Kara had to go in for a doctor’s appointment because she hadn’t been feeling well for awhile, and I was originally going to go to the dentist but ended up going to the doctor as well. I got me some meds and was just fine. Our visit to the doctor only took up about 2 hours of our morning, so we had an entire afternoon and night to do whatever. We mostly drove around, ate fabulous fast food, and went shopping. We were going to go snowboarding on Friday, but the weather wasn’t so great so we decided to put it off ‘til after class on Saturday. That was an excellent decision because Saturday was a BEAUTIFUL day! Oh man, I can’t describe how gorgeous the mountains around Anchorage are…I’ve seen the sun rise and set behind them and it is just amazing.

Anyways, we went snowboarding at Hilltop in Anchorage and this was my first time snowboarding. It was the SCARIEST day of my LIFE! It didn’t start out that way…oh no. I started out on the bunny hill with a few other 5 year olds and their parents. That was pretty awesome. Kara was trying to teach me how to snowboard and I was doing a pretty good job at it. After a few tries I was able to stop without falling on my face or butt. However, I could not turn for my life. I have to go downhill with my right side facing forward because it just felt natural to me. Every time my board would start turning (on its own accord, mind you) so my left side was facing forward, I totally biffed it because it didn’t feel right. Oh man, I fell so many times.

Well, I was perfectly content staying on the bunny hill for the rest of the time, but Kara wanted to go up to the top of the mountain. I don’t know how, but she finally convinced me to go up there with her (after only 2 hours of snowboarding experience). Bad news bears. Here’s how it went down:

1) We get on the ski lift, which is the hardest thing to do on a snowboard. You have to have one foot attached to the board and slide like a skateboard to the lift. Then you have this board hanging down by one foot. Not fun. I do have to say, however, that the view was UH-MAY-ZING!!!!! We were going up the mountain at sunset, so it was sooooo gorgeous! We could see all of Anchorage…one of the best views of my entire life. I took tons of pics, which, let’s be honest, probably won’t be posted on my photobucket for awhile We get to the top and of course I fall of the chair and almost crash into a kid who had fallen off the chair in front of us. Perfect start. Oh, and I forgot to say that the ride up took much longer than I thought…I didn’t realize how high we were going. Wonderful.

2) Well after we get strapped in we start going down. I fall every two feet (not really, but pretty close to it). I was trying to go down the mountain with my board perpendicular to the mountain because I did NOT want to go fast. It worked pretty well until: a) I fell; b) my board starting turning magically by itself; or c) my legs got so tired from trying to keep myself up and going slow down the mountain. After a little ways down the mountain we get to this part where the hill was pretty steep. To the right were some trees. To the left were the huge poles of the ski lift. Anyways, Kara went down ahead of me and then I was supposed to follow after her. Well, every time I would try and get up, my board would angle toward the trees (remember how I said I couldn’t turn?). So then I would make myself fall down so I wouldn’t crash into the trees. I couldn’t see Kara anymore, I didn’t have a helmet (stupid!), and I was scared out of my mind. So I sat at the top of that hill, maybe for about 5 to 10 minutes. I probably would still be up there if it wasn’t for Kara. Apparently she had waited for me at the bottom of that steep part, but I just couldn’t see her because she was hidden by some bushes. She called out to me and so I went down. Phew.

3) Kara stayed with me for the rest of the time, but I was scared and tired and my legs hurt. At one point I couldn’t get up after falling because my legs were tired (Let me tell you, snowboarding is the best workout ever!). Well we eventually get to the very last hill before the bottom of the mountain and this one was even steeper than the one I froze on before. Yeah, I froze on this one too. I was sitting there on the hill, I couldn’t get up and I didn’t want to. Even though I could see the finish line, I was petrified of falling to my death. Well, this lady that I talked to earlier on the bunny hill (she was there with her sons) was on that hill with me. She had fallen too, but was waiting for her sons to come down. At this point I was just going to slide on my butt all the way down the rest of the way because I just didn’t care. Well, the lady kinda joked with me and told me not to cheat. I told her I was scared, so she told me what I needed to do. I got up and snowboarded the rest of the way down. Oh, and check this out…when I got to the bottom I was able to stop without falling! Woo! I had made it down the mountain ALIVE!!!! Most triumphant day ever (even though it was also the scariest!).

So guess how long it took me to get down the mountain? Oh, about 40 minutes. Guess how long the trail is supposed to take? You know, only 8 minutes. Oops…

Kara went back up after we got down the first time, and she made it down in about 15 minutes. Nice. Even though she made me go up with her, she stayed with me the whole time, which I appreciated. Otherwise, I would still be up on that mountain…
Oh, and you know how I said I fell a lot? Yeah, my hands and arms were completely DEAD the next day. My hands hurt so bad from catching my fall that I seriously thought about going to the doctor again because I thought I might have fractured something. But all turned out well…a few sore muscles and tons of bruises, but I can live with that.

TALLY

Alright, so here is a tally of random things that might be interesting:

Number of flights since moving from Washington in August: 24

Number of moose I’ve seen up close: 1
(It’s true! I saw my FIRST MOOSE in Anchorage just a couple weeks ago. It was in our hotel parking lot. I took pictures )

Number of moose I’ve seen in the air: 8
(I counted 8 moose flying back into Kotlik after my last trip to Anchorage. 9 moose in two days! Whoa!)

Coldest temperature I’ve seen so far: -20 degrees F. Brr!

Number of times I’ve eaten moose: 2

Number of times I’ve been on the frozen river: 1
(I’ve been too scared to go on the river, even though it has been safe for quite some time, because of the people who have fallen through the ice this year. But, on our last trip to Anchorage the Grant Airline agent in our village (he’s the guy who takes us to and picks us up from the airport) drove us on the ice. I took video. I couldn’t believe I was DRIVING on a frozen river. Never thought I’d do that in my life.)

Number of times I’ve wanted an Arby’s roast beef sandwich: 98,273,946,090,219,348,987

PRESENT

I have now updated you to today…February 10, 1010. Here’s what’s been happening the past week or so:

-We received our contracts for next year. Yes, they do hand them out at the beginning of February. Why so early, you ask? Well, because they start recruiting teachers for next year at the end of February, early March. I first met the LYSD district at a job fair in Spokane, WA in March last year. So they hire early. Let me say for the record that I will be coming back here next year. It just makes more sense financially to stay. Plus, I get more job experience because I will actually have a job. Whoa! So, yes, I am staying next year. (Hopefully I’ll be able to loop with my kids…we’ll see…)

-Yesterday (Tuesday, Feb. 9) was a bad weather day. It was really stormy—snowy, windy, and just nasty. We had snow sticking to our doors and windows. Snow even got into our entry room. Awesome. Today, however, was so gorgeous and WARM! It was 20 degrees out today!! Isn’t that crazy? I can’t believe that I think 20 degrees is warm, but it soooo is! Shoot, when it gets to be 40-50 degrees I’ll be wearing shorts!

Well, that’s about it. I’ve been typing on my computer for a couple hours now (I typed it out on Word first…and it’s seven pages. HS!). I hope you all enjoy my update. And now I’m going to bed. ‘Til next time…Peace out!

Update: Okay, I tried saving it as a Powerpoint 97-2003 so try it again and see if the video works…I can’t upload videos directly on wordpress, so I had to put it in a powerpoint…I hope this works, if not I’ll figure something else out!

Here is a video of a snowmobile ride I took through Kotlik on my way to the “airport” when I left for winter break. The person riding in the sled is my roommate, Kylie. Oh, and it was about -20 degrees that day so it was SUPER freezing during the ride. My batteries died right before we got to the “airport” because it was so cold out, so you don’t get to see the strip. Oh well.

(P.S.-The whole ride in this video was the entire length of Kotlik. There’s not much to it, in case you didn’t guess).

Finally, an update! Yes, I realize it has been a super long time since I last updated this, but it just kinda gets pushed to the side. I know some of you probably think, “Well, what else is there to do in the middle of nowhere except update your blog?” Well, you’d be surprised (Mom!) Yes, I do get busy. Busy being lazy and watching TV (oops ) I don’t even know what Kylie and I did before cable. Sat around and stared at each other most likely. Anyhoot, I figured since my parents apparently sent out my blog address in their Christmas cards that I should probably do a quick update.

Here goes:

Snow. Freezing temperatures (just a bit below zero). My nose hairs froze literally everytime I went outside. I took a picture for proof. School. Tons of kids absent. Thanksgiving with other teachers. We had 16 people total over at our house. It was fun. Anchorage last weekend for a training. Arby’s. Yum. Warm weather came in. Been in the 30′s the past few days. Snow melted. Now just ice EVERYWHERE. Slipped and fell on the ice for the FIRST TIME since I’ve been here in August. I’ve been trying so hard. Kylie’s fell bunches of times. Home in 11 days. Woo!!

There’s a quick update for you. Hopefully I’ll put more anecdotes (as my mom calls them) up here soon and with more details. Ta ta for now!

Today was an interesting day in school. One of my students decided to fight with another student and punch him in the face. (This was after recess). Then after lunch, another one of my students decided to stab another student in the arm with a sewing needle. Needless to say, both of them were sent home and suspended, but what the deuce?!

So besides those two fun times, there were tons of students absent today as well. On Sunday, one of the older villagers, who happens to be the mom of the girl who works at the post office, died. Death occurs pretty frequently around here (this is the first one that has happened in Kotlik since I’ve been here), and we were told to expect deaths, especially during the winter.

Obviously, the Yup’ik culture handles death very differently than we do in the Lower 48. Since it is very natural and common for deaths to occur, it is not so taboo to discuss. Usually it is very hard to talk about death, especially in elementary school, but the kids here know and understand what death is and know how to handle it.

Anyways, like I said they handle deaths very differently here. After a person dies, they are laid out in their house, or the house of a relative, for a few days so people can visit and pay their respects. They don’t put them in coffins or anything, they are just laying there out in the open. After a few days, they hold a funeral and bury the body. Since the communities here are so small, everyone is affected by the death of one person. This means that most of the community attends the funeral, which is why we had so little students in attendance today. And it’s not just one village that is affected by the death of someone. Since all of these villages are interconnected and everyone has one relative or another living in one of the other villages in the district, these deaths are felt throughout the entire district. A little bit different than down in the Lower 48, huh?

Brr!!!

It has been getting much, much colder lately! A few weeks ago we had a little bit of a cold streak, where the temperature was in the mid- to low-30s for about a week or two. Then after that it warmed up. Now, when I say “warmed up,” it’s all relative. It “warmed up” to the low-40s.

This past Sunday night, however, there seemed to be some kind of switch that was turned on because now the temperature has been in the mid- to low-TWENTIES and windy. Man, it is COLD! Especially with that wind in your face. It is brutal walking to the post office. For the past few days I’ve felt like my nose was going to fall off because of the wind. Brr…

You know what is crazy? The river is freezing up! When Kylie and I went down to the post office on Tuesday, one of the villagers told us that there was some ice on the river. Since we don’t live right next to the river and see it on a daily basis, we went to check it out. And there was ice along the banks and some of the river’s surface was starting to freeze as well. It was crazy! Here are a couple pictures of the river from TUESDAY (more will be posted on my photobucket once I get the chance).

Tuesday, Oct 20

Tuesday, Oct 20

Now, get this. TWO DAYS later (today–Thursday), most of the surface of the river is frozen over!! There is a narrow opening on the opposite bank where the surface hasn’t frozen yet. I went down to check out the river today, and I couldn’t believe it!! Two days and so much more was frozen! Insane!! I can’t wait ’til I can walk on it…how exciting!!

So school has been going pretty well. It is really hard being a first year teacher out here because you just don’t have the resources available to you down in the lower 48. I can’t just go to the store and pick the materials I need for a lesson I want to do the next day. Nope. If I want to do a lesson and we don’t have the materials for it, I either have to order it or see if my mentor can pick stuff up for me and mail it to me. Then I can do that lesson in a couple of weeks. But I guess on the positive side, it forces me to be more creative with the lessons I do and how I use the materials we have.

I don’t think I’ve described how school goes each day for me yet. Well, the teachers have to arrive at 8 am but school doesn’t start until 8:50 am. Since we have the kids for almost the whole day, since there are no specialist times except for Yup’ik, that time in the morning is our prep time. Kids start arriving around the same time as the teachers because the eat breakfast. The entire student body is eligible for free/reduced lunch, and I’m pretty sure it’s all free. These villages are super poor so the food is provided to them at the school. In fact, some kids wouldn’t even come to school if it weren’t for the free food because a lot of these families don’t even have enough money to feed them at home. It is really sad seeing some of the conditions these kids live in. But that’s for another post. Back to my school day…

So the kids come in and eat breakfast, then sometime between 8:45 and 8:50 they let the kids go to their classrooms (they are not allowed to leave the commons area/cafeteria until they are released). The teachers all stand outside their doors and greet their kids (yes, this is required, but I have super fun with it!). I say good morning to all of the kids and give them high-fives or elbow bumps. Yes, I did say “elbow bumps.” Since there is a lack of personal hygiene in these villages, we don’t usually like to touch other hands, unless we wash them right afterwards (which I do). So what they do here sometimes is bump elbows. It is pretty much like bumping fists, but with elbows. Why the elbows? I have no idea. I just go along with it.

Every morning when the kids get into the classroom they come in and wash their hands and brush their teeth. Yes, they do brush their teeth at school. Because they don’t do it at home. At first it was kind of frustrating waiting for them to get their teeth brushed and hands washed because it takes them about 10, sometimes even 15, minutes to get done. And when that happens it cuts into my instructional time. I don’t really care anymore because they’re getting their teeth brushed and hands washed. Yay for clean hands and no stinky breath! The kids wash their hands every time we leave and come back into the classroom (so after library, recess, gym, and reading buddies), and they brush their teeth in the mornings and right after lunch.
Other than that it is pretty much a typical day, except for the fact that I have the kids all day. Even though it can be exhausting being with them all day, I do love going to gym with them. Since I don’t really know how to teach P.E. (that course in college was pointless), we usually just play a variety of group games after warming up and stretching. Now, in the elementary portion of the school we have “Fun Friday” and it’s to reward those students who work hard and get their work completed throughout the week. Each teacher does her own thing for it, but what I started doing is playing music in gym for Fun Friday. Now, like I said, each day in P.E. we play a group game, but on Fridays I give them free time since it is Fun Friday. Well, last Friday I really wanted to jump rope to a song for warm up with the kids. I brought in my laptop, but you couldn’t hear the music unless everyone was standing still, which doesn’t really work with jumping rope. Anyways, one the kids asked, “Why don’t you just hook it up to the speakers?” I had no idea that I could hook my laptop up to them or where to do it, but apparently the sound system is located in the storage closet where all of the gym equipment is kept. And there was a cord that could be used with my laptop with it. So we listened to music and played for that half hour. It was super fun. So now every Friday we will listen to music in the gym. Kind of a long explanation for that, but whatever.

I don’t know if I’ve said it before or not, and I guess I’m too lazy to look back at my other 3 posts , but I really LOVE my class. They are such a great group of kids and I am so lucky that I get to teach them. Sure, I have some challenges with them and it is hard because some of them are so far apart in their levels, but I absolutely, without a doubt would NOT trade this class for anything in the world. (Indubitably!) Even for a class of genius kids all on the same ability level. Nope. These kids are fabulous. They’re funny, smart, goofy, and fun to be around. I can be myself around them and they think it’s great (which I love!). If I stayed another year, I would really, truly want to loop with them and be their teacher for the 6th grade. It would be super fabulous (not to mention a whole heck of a lot easier since I would already know what levels they all were on!).

So the same day it first snowed was also the first time I tried moose. It looks like real meat, smells like real meat, and, for the most part, tasted like real meat. It was kind of tough, but I think that’s because we didn’t prepare it correctly. We should have tenderized it before we cooked it. Oh well. Now we know for next time.

We got the moose from one of the other teachers in the village. Her husband is a local and he went out hunting and got himself a moose. It was pretty cool for him because it was his first time getting a moose. Ever. Anyways, she is a real sweet and generous lady and gave all of the other teachers in school some moose meat. It was pretty good. I think I’d eat it again.

I have not seen a real live moose though. I really want to, especially since certain people, namely my family, keep bugging me about it. Every time we talk on the phone, “Have you seen a moose yet??” Umm, NO! Now I guess I can tell them I’ve seen a dead moose. But just the meaty part though. No fur or legs cut off or anything like that. *

*Actually, I now have seen a cut up moose. My neighbor got a moose leg from one of the villagers and I got to see it. Yummy. I also saw a couple people driving through the village on their four-wheeler with cut up moose parts on it. It was pretty sweet.

This is a few weeks late, but on September 21 it snowed!! Holy cow! I am not even joking. It didn’t snow for very long and it didn’t stick on the ground, but it still snowed. I cannot believe it! It was pretty funny because when I was taking attendance on my computer that day I saw the temperature (it was 37 degrees!). So, I told my students and we started talking about how cold it needed to be before snow fell. And then, seriously, about 10 minutes later it started to snow. Ah! It snowed for about 10 minutes in the morning and for about 5 minutes in the afternoon. But it wasn’t small little snowflakes slowly drifting to the ground. Oh no. These were huge flakes swirling around madly in the wind. It was crazy. And it’s September. Already in the 30’s.

It snowed again on the 28th of September! That was the day I got back from Anchorage (which I’ll have to tell you about in another post)…and apparently it had been snowing all day. When we were in our layover in Bethel waiting to go back to Kotlik, a group of people leaving Kotlik told us that it had been snowing since they left. It was still snowing when we arrived back in Kotlik, but it kind of tapered off and stopped at about 3:30ish. Once again, it didn’t stick, but it still snowed.

It hasn’t snowed since that day, and it actually warmed up for a couple weeks. Now, when I say “warmer,” it’s all relative. It had been in the mid- to low-30s for a couple weeks and then it warmed up to the 40s. Yes, still cold, but warmer than it had been. Now, however, it is back to freezing. The mud is frozen and the puddles on the ground are frozen. The boardwalk gets icy every morning, which is super fun to walk on in the dark going to school.

When we first arrived in Anchorage for our inservice they told us a lot about the Yup’ik culture. One thing they told us about is what they refer to as “Eskimo ice cream.” This “ice cream,” called akutaq (uh-goo-duck) in Yup’ik, is a staple in the Yup’ik culture and they said it consists of Crisco, sugar, and berries, among other things. Now I decided that when I moved here I would try the local food at least once. Might as well since I’m living among the culture, right?

Well last week we attended an advisory school board meeting and one of the local villagers, who also happens to be one of the school’s custodians, brought some akutaq with him to the meeting. It was pinkish, and I thought it looked like it had chocolate chips in it. I also thought it would taste something like the mixture you start out with when making a batch of cookies…crisco/butter, sugar, vanilla. OH. NO. This was absolutely NOTHING like a batch of cookies.

After the meeting was over, we scooped ourselves some akutaq. Since they refer to this stuff as “Eskimo ice cream” I thought it would be cold and hard. Nope. It was soft and warm. Mmm. So why they call it Eskimo ice cream, I have no idea.

After I scooped myself some akutaq and was about to taste it, I caught a whiff of something nasty. Well, I taste the akutaq and it turns out that what I smelled was fish. That is right. Apparently akutaq is made with not only Crisco, some sugar, and berries, but also fish. Delish. Oh. And those “chocolate chips” were actually blackberries. It was pretty disgusting. But hey. At least I can say I tried it, right? …I didn’t want to be rude and throw this stuff away at the school, so I pretended to eat it and took it home with me. Marlee (Kylie’s cat) loved the stuff. Eww.
